Product Overview
The Sun Star single-phase motor is a capacitor-start, capacitor-run induction motor designed for high starting torque on 220–240V single-phase power supply. The starting capacitor provides the phase-shifted current needed to create the rotating magnetic field for motor starting, while the run capacitor maintains power factor correction during normal operation. A centrifugal switch disconnects the starting capacitor once the motor reaches approximately 75% of rated speed.

Common Applications
Industries Served
Small Workshops & Job Shops
Powers lathes, drill presses, grinders, and milling machines in workshops without three-phase supply.
Food Processing (Small Scale)
Flour mills, spice grinders, oil expellers, and grain processing equipment in rural and semi-urban areas.
Agriculture
Domestic water pumps, chaff cutters, and small irrigation systems in agricultural settings.
Key Benefits
- Operates on standard 220V single-phase domestic power — no three-phase supply required
- High starting torque from capacitor-start design enables starting under loaded conditions (flour mills, compressors)
- Centrifugal switch automatically disconnects starting capacitor — no manual intervention or external control needed
Why Choose Our Motors
- Capacitor-start, capacitor-run design delivers higher starting torque than split-phase motors
- Centrifugal switch mechanism tested for 100,000+ operations for long-term reliability
- Available in both aluminium (lightweight) and cast iron (heavy-duty) body options
Manufacturing & Quality
Manufacturing Process
Single-phase motor production follows the same quality standards as our three-phase range. The starting and running capacitors are sourced from rated capacitor manufacturers and incoming-inspected for capacitance tolerance. The centrifugal switch mechanism is assembled and tested for correct engagement/disengagement speed.
Quality Standards
- Centrifugal switch cycle test (minimum 1,000 start-stop cycles)
- Starting torque verification under loaded conditions
- Capacitor value verification within ±5% tolerance
- Insulation resistance testing on both main and auxiliary windings

Selection Guide
Single-phase motors are limited to 5 HP maximum due to the inherent current limitations of single-phase supply. For flour mills and compressors, choose a capacitor-start motor (higher starting torque) rather than a split-phase motor.
Comparison With Similar Motors
| Feature | Sun Star Motors™ | Typical Market Motor |
|---|---|---|
| Starting Method | Capacitor-start, capacitor-run (high torque) | Split-phase or capacitor-start only |
| Switch Durability | Centrifugal switch tested for 100,000+ cycles | Basic switch with limited life |
| Body Options | Cast iron and aluminium options | Aluminium only in most cases |
| Overload Protection | Thermal overload option available | Not always offered |
| Capacitor Quality | Rated capacitors with ±5% tolerance | Generic capacitors with wider tolerance |
Installation Guidelines
- Verify that the power supply is 220–240V single phase before connecting — connecting to 415V three-phase will destroy the motor instantly
- Mount on a flat, rigid surface with all foot bolts tightened — single-phase motors produce more vibration at startup than three-phase motors
- Connect the motor as per the wiring diagram — single-phase motors have separate terminal connections for main winding, auxiliary winding, and capacitors
Maintenance Tips
- Listen for the centrifugal switch click during startup (engaging) and during coast-down (disengaging) — absence of the click indicates switch malfunction
- Check capacitor condition annually — a swollen or leaking capacitor must be replaced immediately
- Grease bearings every 3,000–5,000 operating hours with lithium EP2 grease
Troubleshooting Guide
| Issue | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Motor hums but does not start | Faulty starting capacitor, stuck centrifugal switch (open position), or load too heavy for starting torque | Replace starting capacitor with same rated value. Inspect centrifugal switch mechanism for stuck contacts. Reduce starting load if possible. |
| Motor starts but runs slowly and draws high current | Run capacitor failed, centrifugal switch stuck in starting position (starting winding remains energised), or low supply voltage | Check run capacitor. If centrifugal switch contacts are welded closed, the starting winding will overheat — replace the switch assembly. Check supply voltage. |
