High-Torque Motors for Compressor Applications

Compressors demand motors that can overcome high breakaway torque on every start cycle. Our industrial motors deliver 250%+ starting torque with thermal protection built for the demanding compression cycle.

The Challenge

Why This Application Demands Specialized Motors

Compressors are among the most demanding motor-driven loads in any factory. Reciprocating compressors require 250-300% starting torque to overcome piston compression on startup. The motor must handle high inertia loads, frequent start-stop cycles in loaded conditions, and pulsating torque from the compression stroke. In Indian summers, ambient temperatures above 45°C combined with the heat of compression create extreme thermal stress that degrades standard motor insulation rapidly.

Our Solution

How Sun Star Motors Solves It

Sun Star Motors™ heavy-duty motors for compressor applications feature extra-high starting torque to handle loaded starts without tripping. Our reinforced cast iron frames absorb the vibration from reciprocating pistons, while Class F insulation provides a generous thermal margin above the 40°C ambient design point. The TEFC enclosure prevents oil mist and dust from entering the motor, extending winding life. Available in foot mount (B3) for belt-driven compressors and flange mount (B5) for direct-coupled screw compressors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Compressor Motors — FAQs

01Why does my compressor motor trip on startup?
Compressor motors trip during loaded starts because the motor cannot develop enough torque to overcome piston compression. Solutions: 1) Use a motor with higher starting torque (250%+ FLT), 2) Install an unloader valve that releases pressure during startup, 3) Use a star-delta or soft starter to manage inrush current. Sun Star heavy-duty motors provide extra-high starting torque specifically for compressor applications.
02Single phase or three phase for my workshop compressor?
For compressors up to 5 HP in workshops without three-phase supply, our single-phase motors (220-240V) with centrifugal starting switch work well. Above 5 HP, three-phase (415V) is strongly recommended for better efficiency, cooler operation, and higher starting torque. Three-phase motors are also more energy efficient, saving 5-10% on electricity costs.
03How often should I maintain my compressor motor?
For compressor motors running 8+ hours daily: Monthly — check terminal connections and tighten lugs. Quarterly — clean cooling fins with compressed air, check belt tension (belt-driven). Annually — measure insulation resistance (Megger test), check bearing condition. In dusty environments, increase cleaning frequency to weekly.
